A word from the CEO Benno Groosman
To give new and existing investors the chance to benefit from the positive developments at Surge-on Medical, we have decided for another extension of our funding campaign.
What can we achieve with the money raised
- Start the large-scale manufacturing of the Steerable Punch
- Expand the team, to keep up with the increasing demand for our instruments worldwide
- Additional money raised can be invested in the development of further product lines
What we have already achieved in 2020
- Final engineering of the Steerable Punch for large-scale manufacturing
- Steerable Punch registered CE class I since May 12, 2020
- Demand for new product lines in ENT and spine surgery based on our platform technology: first 3mm diameter prototypes successful
Reasons to invest
- Innovative: 4 international patents for platform technology, CE registration completed
- Platform Technology: Scalable product range for many medical applications
- Award-winning Company: Engineer of the year (2016); Pharma Oscar (2019)
- Market potential for current instruments: €5.3bn+ worldwide per year
With our products we can help
- Surgeons: Better handling and workflow
- Patients: Shorter surgeries, lower risk of tissue damage, faster recovery
- Hospitals: Cost savings on instruments, cleaning and surgery time
Our current product pipeline
- Arthroscopy: Steerable Punch (global market launch)
- Laparoscopy: Steerable Grasper
- Robotic surgery and remote robotic surgery: PoLaRs and PoLaRs VR
At Surge-on Medical, we believe that surgeons can do more than current instruments allow. With this in mind, we have developed the next generation of minimally invasive surgical instruments. Through our cable-free platform technology, we created freedimensional instruments that provide better access to surgical areas and replace current pre-bent instrumentation. Surge-on Medical has been granted four international patents which make minimally invasive instruments steerable, detachable and cleanable.
Our first product, the Steerable Punch, is an arthroscopic cutter for knee surgery. We’re also developing an advanced laparoscopy line and a portable surgical robot (PoLaRS). All our instruments are based on our patented steerable and cable-free technology, with the potential to grow to more surgical areas to expand our market reach
Surge-on Medical’s Innovation and Its Market Potential
An innovative technology is only useful as long as it fulfills a market need and provides real value to its users. In this regard, we had a talk with Mr. Bart and Niels van Straten, Board of Directors of Van Straten Medical.

The Steerable Punch is the first steerable, detachable and fully cleanable arthroscopic cutter for knee surgery. Steerable arthroscopic instruments drastically reduce the number of pre-bent instruments needed per surgery. In addition, they allow the surgeon to steer towards remote locations with ease.
Key features of the Steerable Punch:
- Familiar, comfortable and intuitive design for the surgeon
- Minimal tissue damage for the patients
- Better performance due to workflow improvement during surgery
- A steerable instrument replaces current pre-bent instruments in arthroscopy
- Cable-free instrument design approved and fostered by CSA personnel
- Easy to clean, to inspect and to reuse
- CE class I registration completed
The Need for Steerable Instruments in Surgery
Minimally invasive surgeries are still predominantly performed using handheld instruments. As such, surgeons need appropriate tools to translate elaborate hand motions towards the surgical site through the very small incisions that limit their capabilities.

The Steerable Grasper is the first multi-steerable instrument of our advanced laparoscopic surgery line. Based on our patented steerable mechanism, the Steerable Grasper features freedom wrist function of two degrees in the tip that allows surgeons to perform advanced laparoscopic procedures in an intuitive and ergonomic way.
What a Surgeon Thinks of Surge-on Medical’s Technology
Innovation just for the sake of innovation is not valuable anymore. The current developments in healthcare must meet a specific market need or fulfill the needs of patients and surgeons.

Surge-on Medical is currently developing a surgical robotic system that is portable, cleanable, affordable, and compatible with our steerable instruments: the Portable Laparoscopy Robot System (PoLaRS).
Surge-on Medical is developing a Virtual Reality training system for robotic surgery, the PoLaRS-VR training module. A master robot connected to cutting-edge training software will allow surgeons to develop the skills they need for robotic surgery.
Funds use and funding levels
The funds will support the large-scale manufacturing and global market launch of the Steerable Punch, along with the further development of the Steerable Grasper and PoLaRS. The funds will also be allocated for R&D activities in new surgical fields and to expand our market reach.
Expand with us
Take your chance and invest now in a company that
- Has the potential to replace all minimally invasive instruments that are currently on the market for one of our freedimensional instruments
- Owns the unique know-how on cable-less freedimensional instruments for minimally invasive surgery.
- Works together with leading surgeons, universities and manufacturers to develop tools according to what surgeons need.
- Has a very experienced management team combining a track record in entrepreneurship, engineering and commercialization!
